Felony Friday 055 - A Rumor Sent a Teenage Girl to Prison for a Brutal Murder in Vegas
Felony Friday host John Odermatt is joined by award-winning investigative journalist Jordan Smith. Jordan is based in Austin, Texas and has covered criminal justice for almost 20 years. She is an extremely talented reporter with a reputation for analyzing complex social and legal issues. Her work has appeared in The Nation, The Crime Report, and The Intercept, among many other places.
On today's show John and Jordan discuss an investigative article Jordan wrote for the Intercept titled "Nightmare in Sin City - How a Rumor Sent a Teen to Prison for Murder in Vegas." In the article Jordan shares the tragic story of an eighteen-year-old girl by the name of Kirstin Blaise Lobato who was sent to prison for a crime that there appears to be no possible way she committed. Jordan shares Kirstin's story, from troubled youth growing up in a small Nevada town to being charged with and eventually convicted of committing a brutal murder. Except there's one rather massive problem with the detectives' story implicating Kirstin. The only evidence linking the teenager to the crime is a rumor.
This is a bizarre, complicated case, but Jordan does a phenomenal job of explaining, in painstaking detail, every aspect. In fact, there's a very good chance that Jordan's analysis of the case could be the catalyst that ends up exonerating Kirstin.
This is a can't miss episode of Felony Friday. And Jordan's investigative article at the Intercept is a must read in order to fully understand this complicated and downright bizarre case.
