A talk with Mal Weinges, Mal Wienges is currently the Chairman Emeritus of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Wienges served NATAS as its Chairman from 2011-2014 and as National Vice Chairman from 2008-2011 (two terms), and as its National Treasurer from 1990 to 1994 and from 2006 to 2008. In addition, he was the National Trustee of the New York Chapter from 1988 to 1993, and was an Alternate Trustee of the New York Chapter from 1985 to 1988. He also served as the National Trustee of the Rocky Mountain Chapter from 2002 to 2006. In addition, Wienges was a member of the National Awards Committee from 1992 to 2006.
Wienges spent an illustrious 31 years at the CBS Television Network. He began as a management trainee and rose to the position of Vice President, Sales/Marketing and Technical Systems. From 1975 to 1985, he was Producer of The CBS Thanksgiving Day Parades for which he was nominated for two Emmys. Mal also received two National Emmys, including one for technical achievement for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, and a second National Emmy in 1992 for the NFL on CBS.
Wienges is credited with originating the concept of remote production for daytime dramas (soap operas) when he took The Guiding Light to the Bahamas in 1976. Since then, Mal has participated in more than 152 location productions. Wienges was also nominated for three Daytime Emmys.
Wienges is an honors graduate from C.W. Post College with a B.S. in atomic and nuclear physics. He obtained a Masters of Science degree in engineering management from Long Island University. In addition, he is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Wienges has served as a Director on the Arizona Film Commission and was Chairman of the Sedona Chamber of Commerce from 2008-2011.
