The special position of Ireland was referred to several times during this morning’s European Parliament debate on Brexit. The Parliament’s political groups set out their Brexit priorities during the debate. The chair of the European People’s Party the EPP, which is the Parliament’s biggest group, told MEPs the avoidance of a hard border in Ireland was a priority. The Independent MEP Marian Harkin emphasised the references to Ireland that have been made in the European Parliament’s document on Brexit.
