Open Sources Guelph - June 29, 2017

This week on Open Sources Guelph we're having summer thoughts. The federal government has risen for the summer, and we will recap a not-so-great couple of months had by the prime minister, and then we will look at the special holiday weekend coming up and what it means to a couple of curmudgeon's with their own community radio show. But there are some politicians that don't take the summer off, or they at least don't take July off. We'll host another one of the Royal City's representatives on this week's show. 

This Thursday, June 29, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss:

1) Parliament's Out. The House of Commons officially let out for summer vacation this week, and not a moment too soon because the senate was about to hold up more legislation just about any minute. The budget showdown with his own senate was one hiccup for Justin Trudeau and the Liberal government over the last several months, which one commentator said was the period in which "Sunny Ways" finally came to an end. There was the sudden revoking of the electoral reform promise, pending trade wars with the Trump administration, and a slap fight over changing the rules of how the business of Parliament is carried out. Was this the winter, and spring, of discontent for Justin Trudeau?

2) Birthday Wishes. As you may have heard, this weekend Canada turns 150 years old. It's a pretty big deal because how often does your country have a sesquicentennial, right? Well, people are highlighting this week all the good and great things about our country, and there's a lot there to be proud of, but we're going to do something different on this week's show and talk about where there's still room for improvement in Canada. Hey, we love living here, it's better than living somewhere under the thumb of former/current real estate developers and reality TV star, but there's always room for growth. We love Canada, and we have ideas on issues to make it even better, so what might those be?

3) The Get Downer. It's a very busy week at Guelph City Council with two meetings, so we're happy that our guest was able to take the time for a pop by. We're pleased to welcome back to the show Ward 5 City Councillor Cathy Downer, who proudly co-represents CFRU, the building its situated in, and the campus it sits upon, and we'll talk to her about the surprising controversies of wading pools and expanding the borders of the Downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA), and how she plans on spending her summer vacation. We're also pleased to ask any and all questions you might have about what's going on at City Hall, and we'll also talk to her about her pet issue, updating the Ontario Municipal Board.
