With 2017 on pace to be America’s worst fire season on record and as California is still reeling from its deadliest wildfire disaster ever, the National Wildlife Federation released a new report on Oct. 19--“Megafires: The Growing Risk to America’s Forests, Communities, and Wildlife.” It’s available here: nwf.org/megafires-report
In addition to the six large fires that have recently scorched parts of California, firefighters have battled blazes in Montana, Oregon, Texas and West Virginia, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. While the number of fires is down this year, the acres burned per fire has soared, pointing to global warming’s effect on intensifying blazes.
“Megafires” details what’s making fires worse, including increasing development in wild areas, poor forest management, and global warming. It also prescribes what Congress can do now to help federal agencies, states and communities deal with the growing risk by solving the wildfire funding crisis, prioritizing forest restoration, advancing outcome-driven wildfire management practices, and cutting climate-disrupting carbon pollution.
Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of National Wildlife Federation, is available for radio interviews to discuss the ongoing megafires, the new report and his recent testimony before Congress urging bipartisan support. He’s appeared on NBC News, ABC News, National Public Radio, MSNBC, the Weather Channel, and many other outlets.
