Nació en Portugal el año 1495. Después de una milicia llena de peligros, se entregó por completo al servicio de los enfermos. Fundó un hospital en Granada y vinculó a su obra un grupo de compañeros, los cuales constituyeron después la Orden de los Hospitalarios de San Juan de Dios. Destacó, sobre todo, por su caridad con los enfermos y necesitados. Murió en Granda el año 1550.
