Girls just wanna have fun and steal things this week on End Credits! For the one millionth time, women have proven to be a force to be reckoned with at the box office thanks to Ocean's 8, which we'll be reviewing this week along with some chat about news items. For instance, another young actress has fallen victim to online harassment, while a potential TV revival got nipped in the bud, and a whole lot of highly anticipated trailers were released.
This Wednesday, June 13, at 2 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Jesse Mellott will discuss:
Kelly's a Hero. Star Wars: The Last Jedi actress Kelly Marie Tran joined a growing list of celebrities that have ditched social media due to inexplicable harassment. Tran was attacked on the basis of her sex, her race, and her body size in what's become a textbook example of toxic masculinity online, but what on Earth is driving this harassment? Why is it a rule for a minority of fans that there's no girls allowed in Star Wars? We'll try to explain as best we can, and we'll look at why this phenomena may not apply to our review of the week.
Not There for You Anymore. Friends co-creator David Crane drew a read line on one TV show revival last week when he said there was no way, no how, that Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Ross would ever get together again. In the current TV climate, everything old is new again, and not just remakes, but revival series like Roseanne, Gilmore Girls, The X-Files, and Arrested Development, but Friends? That's a big "no"! So why are we not due for a return visit to Central Perk, and are things going a little too far with these revivals?
Everything is Awesome! It was a big week for trailers this last week, and we'll talk about five of them. First Lisbeth Salander returns (as Claire Foy), but while David Fincher does not, his aesthetic certainly does in The Girl in the Spider's Web. Then we'll grade Bradley Cooper's singing voice and Lady Gaga's acting in the trailer for A Star is Born, Bumblebee's solo round with Hailee Steinfeld in the Transformers spin-off, and the return of Michael Myers and Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween. And finally, we'll see if everything's still awesome with LEGO Movie 2: The Second Piece.
REVIEW: Ocean's 8 (2018). A criminal named Ocean just got out of prison, and they've got a heist in mind that will be both highly lucrative, and deliver personal revenge for out protagonist, who puts together a big crew of intersecting skills to pull off the ultimate con. But enough about Ocean's 11! Yes, the Sandra Bullock vehicle hews a little too close to the playbook laid out in Steven Soderbergh's original remake of the Rat Pack classic, but the all-female heist movie stands out in so many different and enjoyable ways. You're going to willingly give up your wallet for these crooks.
End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 2 pm.
