Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael
Society & Culture
On this edition of Parallax Views my friend and co-host of the Alternatives podcast C. Derick Varn joins me to discuss his recently published poetry collection Apocalyptics (Unlikely Books, 2018)
C. Derick Varn is perhaps most well-known for his political commentaries on the Symptomatic Commentary blog and the Symptomatic Redness podcast, however he considers himself a poet first and a pundit second.
We begin the discussion by talking about Derick's poetic influences, including Ezra Pound and Philip Larkin.
The conversation takes off and goes into many different territories and digressions from there. For instance, we discuss the the influence of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attack on his poetry and his memories of that day.
We also discuss the nature of trauma, the problems of art-as-therapy, and the mainstreaming of nihilism in pop culture. All this and much more in this episode of Parallax Views.
