Irish citizens could face hefty US bills even if they’ve never lived or worked there.
That’s according to the Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes. He’s referring to the so-called “Accidental Americans” who may have been born in the US or who lived there briefly in the past and who could face tax bills from the US tax authorities.
The plight of the so-called ‘Accidental Americans” was voted on last week in the European Parliament.
MEPs in Strasbourg voted for a resolution calling on the European Commission and EU countries to come to an arrangement with the US to ensure people aren’t unfairly landed with a tax bill from the American Inland Revenue Service the IRS.
