Nació en Caleruega (España), alrededor del año 1170. Estudió teología en Palencia y fue nombrado canónigo de la Iglesia de Osma. Con su predicación y con su vida ejemplar, combatió con éxito la herejía albigense. Con los compañeros que se le adhirieron en esta empresa, fundó la Orden de Predicadores. Murió en Bolonia el día 6 de agosto de 1221.
