Chess Records was an American record company started by two brothers, Leonard and Phil Chess. They started the label in 1947 as Aristocrat. The label changed its name to Chess Records in 1950. Based in Chicago, it specialized in blues and rhythm and blues. Chess soon became known for recordings that became the best in Chicago Blues. The label played a large roll in amplifying the blues, recording some of its greatest talents and bringing the form into the modern era.
