Freedom Spring: African American Soldiers in the Civil War

By the end of the Civil War roughly 180,000 African American men, many of them former slaves, were soldiers in the United States Army. These USCT (United States Colored Troops) soldiers made up approximately 10% of the entire United States armed force.
