#54 | How can fundraising professionals better engage with the LGBTQ donors that their organization already has?
As someone who believes that our challenges in fundraising have transitioned from inferiority to identity, I was eager to connect with Mack during the AFP ICON conference. In addition to his work as the regional director of development for the nation's largest provider of free, school-based, after-school programs for middle school students, Mack uses his sense of humor to help nonprofit organizations create more inclusive fundraising programs and better engage with LGBTQ donors.
Rather than assuming LGBTQ donors are a new donor segment to take advantage of, Mack points out that the LGBTQ community is already represented among your current donors, and their stories relate to your mission in ways you may not have considered or understand. In working with clients who would generally assume otherwise, I have found this to be especially true.
Before we wrapped up, I also appreciated hearing Mack’s thoughts about how we can better navigate conversations with those whose identities are different than our own. As Mack suggested, learning how to find common bonds rather than focusing on what makes us different is always the best place to start.

Here’s some feedback from those who attended our seminar in Toronto last month.

“Probably one of the best days of professional development I've experienced.” — Jack Silverstein, VP, Development at National Capital Region YMCA-YWCA, Ottawa, 2019
“I found the seminar fun, instructive, affirming and educational.” — Sue Ellen English, National Director, Development, Prison Fellowship Canada
If you're interested in joining us at an upcoming stop on the How Fundraising Really Works roadshow, it's it important to know that this is not the typical “Tips and Tricks” experience we've grown accustom to. Instead, we're going to confront the real reasons for why most fundraising strategies are designed to fail, challenge everyone’s assumptions about how fundraising really works, and ensure that fundraising professionals know how to be recognized and admired for meaningful work. Anyone who isn’t thinking more critically about the fundraising profession when they leave wasn’t paying attention.
