Manufacturers of fishing nets and marine gear that get lost at sea will be responsible for their management in the future.
A new law approved this week (Wednesday 27 march) by the European Parliament, applies the polluter pays principle. This new regime will apply to fishing gear, to ensure that manufacturers, and not fishermen, bear the costs of nets lost at sea.
In the future, producers of marine litter such as fishing nets will have to cover the cost of their waste management once they’re delivered to port reception facilities.
The new laws are all part of European moves to reduce marine litter. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says it’s a positive move.
