"Til Facebook Do Us Part (The Role of Social Media on Divorce) on Breaking Free: A Modern Divorce Podcast Episode #161
There might be a new breed of homewrecker in town — and it isn’t who you might think. In this week's episode, Rebecca Zung, Esq. and Susan Guthrie, Esq. are talking social media and it's incredible upswing into being involved in nearly every divorce! From replacing the need for a private investigator to relationship goals envy to reconnecting and rekindling romances with old flames, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and the like are wreaking havoc on relationships. In fact, way back in 2014, 81 percent of top divorce lawyers reported that their clients cited social media for the demise of their marriage, according to a study released by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers; an ABC News poll reported 33 percent of divorce filings contained the word Facebook, and 66 percent of people going through divorce at that time cited Facebook as their primary source of online divorce evidence.
Many experts say that it usually starts off innocently. A spouse is curious about what might have happened with a former boyfriend or girlfriend and they start exchanging dialogue about their lives, children and careers. Before social media and the boom of cellphones, people “lost track” of one another once their lives diverged. Staying in touch took much more effort. It was challenging to write letters or expensive to make long-distance telephone calls.Nowadays connecting is as easy as tapping on the “friend request” button. The flip side is extramarital affairs; these once stealth and covert operations now exist on a different playing field. Cheating spouses are far more likely to get caught. Every “friend” is a potential private investigator — from the actual spouse to the brother-in-law, neighbor or co-worker. Salacious romance details and suggestive photographs are sure to be noticed and shared.
Nearly EVERY divorce has a social media component. Check out this episode for more of the gory details, how they can be used for and against you divorce court, what to look for and how to protect yourself.
