Amy C. O'Neill, MS, LPC, is a therapist and a leader in the international mass violence community. She shares that the best ways to get to the other side of a life-shattering experience are to connect with others; to own what you went through; to seek acknowledgment and validation; and to be kind to yourself. She notes that after trauma, it's possible to be in two places at one time—you may be struggling, but you're also allowed to keep living and to experience joy. Amy learned these lessons after enduring trauma and injury as a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.
