What if the DNA of all life in an area was being mutated? On the surface, Annihilation is a story about a group of scienctist trying to understand a strange phenomenon. They venture into an otherworldly border called "The Shimmer". A beautiful alien world some truly horrific mutations. Going below the surface you quickly realize that Annihilation is a film all about three major themes. Duplication, Mutation, and Self-Destruction. "When dealing with aliens, we often make them like us in some way. Maybe they want to eat us, or maybe they want our water, our resources. But these are all sorts of human concerns.." Annihilation turns this stereotypical storyline on its head and creates an alien with no motivation at all. And truthfully, we find that even more terrifying.
