Topics for the new year!
Jim and Marry were both patients in a Mental Hospital. One day, while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Jim suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank like a stone to the bottom and stayed there. Mary promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled Jim out. When the medical director became aware of Mary’s heroic act, he immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as he now considered her to be mentally stable. When he went to tell her the news, he said, “Marry, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you’re being discharged because since you where able to jump in and save the life of another patient, I think you’ve regained your senses. The bad news is that Jim, the patient you saved, hung himself in the bathroom with the belt of his robe. I am so sorry, but he’s dead.” Mary replied, “He didn’t hang himself, I put him there to dry.”
Even when life is not what you expect, if your life is in Gods hands and you are serving him, he has the outcome planned, in place and with perfect timing.
1 Samuel 16
Jesse is asked by the prophet Samuel to bring his sons in… one of them will be anointed King.
Now before we talk about David the runt of the litter, lets first think this over. God has planned way before the beginning of time to anoint David to be King. He made sure that he was trained in the wilderness watching sheep, fighting off lions and bears saving stubborn little sheep. He had David born the least of the brothers to teach him empathy and patience. He would be forgotten to show himself again that his father didn’t think much of him, but that did not matter, what mattered is what God thought of him. God had a plan in place, a time in place and a purpose all waiting. DAVID DIDN’T SEE IT - BUT HE TRUSTED GOD AND SERVED HIM FAITHFULLY.
God saw David despised
God saw David forgotten
God saw David as a shepherd
God saw David as the youngest
God saw all that David was and was not… he knew his trials and troubles and his worry and questions…
But it didn’t change his plan for David… David couldn’t see the outcome, but it didn’t change the outcome.
You may not see the outcome
But keep serving God and he will take care of it.
This New Year it is easy to get caught up in all the reasons we feel like “it” won’t happen… what ever that “it” is. But why not focus on the fact that God knows everything, is in the control room of your life as long as you serve him and he will take care of you regardless of what circumstances seem to say.
Years ago we were serving as youth pastors in Seattle and we were very poor. The salary was not much, but we knew we were supposed to be there. One day I came home and my wife was very depressed. She said she was so mad that we were so poor she couldn’t even go out and get ice cream for the boys and herself. I tried to console her and said “God sees where we are at”… yeah that didn’t exactly appease the situation. She had fixed a simple dinner and as we were sitting down eating a knock came on the door. I went and opened it up and there was a man from our church standing there. He worked for a large grocery chain and said he was passing by and had all this ice cream he needed to get rid of before it melted. It was given to him from the vendor as giveaways. It was not only ice cream, it was all of our favorite flavors. 4 gallons, 4 different flavors served right at dinner time. That is when I really started to realize, God knows.
Head into this year, trusting that God knows.
