שוקו אסאהרה היה המנהיג והמייסד של כת אום שינריקיו היפנית, כת קיצונית שדרשה שליטה חריפה במאמינים שלה ולבסוף נעצרו רבים מתומכיה לאחר מתקפת טרור ברכבת התחתית בטוקיו ב1995.
במתקפה שחררו מספר חברי הכת את גז הסארין הקטלני במספר מוקדים שונים ברכבת התחתית באיזורים של רוב משרדי הממשלה היפנית.
במתקפה נהרגו 12 איש, 50 איש נפצעו באופן אנוש ועוד כ-1000 איש חוו בעיות זמניות בראייה בגללה.
