Matthew 1:1–17
How do you respond when you come across a genealogy in your regular Bible reading? It can seem like a meaningless list of names if we don’t understand what the author is doing. Why would Matthew begin his gospel with a list of names leading up to Jesus? This passage shows us that God’s plan has come to fruition. The Seed of Abraham, the promised son of David, the King, the Messiah, the Christ has come in the person of Jesus. For Matthew and his readers this is the pinnacle of the history of creation.
