Dagon was Stuart Gordon's last feature film foray into Lovecraft adaptations and - with no disrespect meant to the late writer/director - thank Cthulhu for that. The incongruously named adaptation of "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" has more in common with Resident Evil 4 than it does existential dread, leading the boys to ponder what led Gordon and writer Dennis Paoli to tap the Lovecraft well once more in such an uninspired manner.
What makes this film such a burden, you ask? It could be the nonsensical late film twist. It could be lead Ezra Godden bizarrely modeling his character after comedian Harold Lloyd. It could be that setting the film in a foreign country plays into the inherent racism in Lovecraft's source text. Or, more realistically, it could be all of the above. The boys get to all of that, but after James walks us through some notable Spanish-language horror films and before Jim airs his grievances about Stuart Gordon being the arbiter of Lovecraft cinema.
