David Hume on Big Banging
David Hume is an irresistible genius, a 1700s Scottish philosopher centuries ahead of the times. He provided the saving grace for current Big Bang cosmology before anyone had any idea how powerful his doctrine would become. At that time no one knew anything about the origins of the universe. Nothing. He examined and identified the logical options. In the 1950s Big Bang theory was about to be swept off the table. "So where did your 'big bang' (singularity of space/time/mass/energy) come from?” Our Astrophysics/Cosmology theorists panicked. But Philosophy and Hume came to the rescue. The scientists went to us, to Philosophy, seeking help. We provided. We pointed out that this was all discussed conceptually around 300 years ago. And before.
Today David Hume is acknowledged in Astrophysics and Cosmology as one who "Saw far and knew much". So: Did he save Big Bang theory, or corner it into a deeper enquiry? Or both?
We will examine these questions on our Final! Soon to come.
