Norddalsviadukten eller Norddalsbrua som vi kjenner konstruksjonen som, var strengt tatt ikke nødvendig for å bygge jernbane til Kiruna. Men militæret krevde at det måtte bygges en bru som kunne sprenges. Dette var bakgrunnen for at NSB sitt brokontor i Kristiania i hui og hast måtte hive seg rundt å tegne en bru som Generalstaben kunne godkjenne. Tiden var knapp, høsten 1900 godkjente de militære myndighetene bruplanene og to år senere skulle den stå ferdig. I mellomtiden skulle jobben ut på anbud, brua skulle bygges og så fraktes vinterstid opp til fjells med kun hest og vogn som fraktehjelp. Blant annet skulle 20 kilometer med tømmer hugges i Skjomen, tørkes, sages og fraktes til Rombaksbotn. Bare det en nesten umulig oppgave, tidsnøden tatt i betraktning.
