The European Parliament has strongly condemned proposed cuts to the EU’s long-term budget known as the multi-annual financial framework, the MFF.
This morning the parliament debated the outcome of the recent EU Summit of leaders which ended early on Tuesday morning.
The EU Council agreed a seven hundred and fifty billion euro (€750bn) Covid recovery fund. They also reached unanimous agreement on the MFF which will run from 2021 to 2027.
However MEPs have heavily criticised the Council’s agreement to cut funding to crucial EU programmes including the research and innovation fund called Horizon Europe. Cuts have also been made to the Just Transition Fund which is supposed to help EU regions make the transition to low carbon economies.
The Fianna Fail MEP Barry Andrews says there are real consequences to making these cuts.
