October 6, 2020 After a decade in retail at Ralph Lauren and Amazon learning fashion merchandising, buying, and ecommerce, Sydney Badger teamed up with a former coworker from Amazon to start a "fashion business". That long winding journey to figure out how to build a more financially and environmentally sustainable business in the notoriously wasteful fashion industry eventually led to the creation of a unique business model, her company Public Habit and its audacious double bottom line. Public Habit presents a value proposition in direct contrast to her prior employer's cash cow Amazon Prime. Consumers can expect their high quality garments to arrive weeks after completing a purchase because Public Habit maintains no inventory, instead producing every piece only after receiving the individual order.
As foreigners, Sydney and her husband were basically kicked out of China at the start of the pandemic in late 2019, returning to the USA in time to relive the beginning of the same pandemic all over, just in a different place. Sydney discusses what it's like running a business across the ocean from your manufacturer, delays first in production and then in shipping, fundraising, and of course adaptations and adjustments to survive COVID-19.
