Our special guest, Bonnie Sadigh, shared a moving story about her first introductions to racial bias as a 13-year old moving to the United States, not speaking the language. Another layer of the story happened years later when her sons wanted to bring a friend home, and the friend insisted that the boys first tell her that he was black - because he thought that might mean that she wouldn’t want him to come home with her boys; she welcomed the friend, and he is still close to her sons, 20 years later. The inquiry was about clearly seeing each one of us, and being clearly seen. How can we respect one another? What steps can we take to get out of our comfort zones, and expand our awareness with respect and care?
