Do you feel like you spend so much time researching, looking at blogs, watching videos, reading books, trying to piece together all of the thyroid information so that you can finally start feeling better. If that sounds like you today's episode is just for you. We are going to be talking seven things that are keeping you stuck and wasting your time. And then we'll get into some strategies about what to do. Welcome back to the thriving thyroid podcast, where we choose to become empowered patients and take our health into our own hands.
Hi, I'm Shannon Hansen, a Christian entrepreneur, a mom of three. And after dealing with my own health mysteries, I made it my mission to learn everything I could about the thyroid. I soon became certified as a holistic wellness practitioner, a functional nutrition practitioner and a functional diagnostic practitioner. And so much more. After that, I founded the revolutionary thyroid program, the Hansen method as a health professional and a mom, I fully understand the importance of having a fun, simple, and sustainable plan for achieving a responsive thyroid plan.
So I share actionable and practical strategies for developing a responsive to vibrate so that the ambitious moms and women can gain freedom from fatigue and lose the thyroid weight once. And for all each week, I will be here for you along with my guest experts, we will be sharing simple and tangible tips that work for not only your thyroid, your hormones, your family, and your mindset, so that you can get back to living the life that you envisioned for yourself.
Welcome to the Thriving thyroid podcast. I am so excited to have this conversation with you here today, because I know for myself, I wasted so much time, so much energy and so much effort trying to put all of the pieces together so that I had a plan and I could actually start feeling better because what I found as I was going from doctor to doctor, trying to find some kind of pill or solution to help me feel better when ultimately I was left, feeling stuck.
And I will share a little bit more about what that journey looks like and help me just understand where I'm coming from and why I feel so passionate about removing these things that are taking all of your time and your energy and your finances and everything in between. So number one out of seven is having your thyroid tested too frequently. I typically recommend going for the six month marker because any time we are changing your diet medication, anything it takes about nine months, excuse me, nine weeks.
It takes weeks for your thyroid to even itself back out and to find homeostasis for itself. And that's one of the big jobs that thyroids have is that they want to help create homeostasis inside the body. And it can't do that if we're constantly changing the plan. So my recommendation have the thyroid test wait, six months, if in between there around three months, you're like, man, I'm really still feeling like garbage, go back in and have it retested.
However, if you're feeling good, don't touch a thing. Don't go back in and have another test done because your Dr. May change your medication and you may still feel really bad, or you may go back to feeling bad and we don't want that to happen. The second thing we need to know about this is that if you have Hashimoto's or graves, your antibodies come back out of range really high, but you're feeling great. Your Dr. May want to change your medication or may want to change things for you. And I don't want you to self-sabotage. I don't want you to start changing the way you're eating or something that is working, because it, again takes time for our body to make those adjustments. It's going to take six weeks. It's going to take eight weeks. It's going to take, you know, six months for the body to begin to even out.
And at that time we should start to see numbers trending down. And what I find is when people are, are testing too frequently, is that these women begin to get frustrated because they're not seeing the progress that they think they should be having at a certain amount of time. And so what I really want you guys to focus on doing is consistently coming up with a plan and tracking your symptoms, mapping new symptoms and starting to see wow. Things are really compounding and they're really starting to come together and work together. That is the most important thing. Plus, you're going to save a little bit of money on copays and lab testing and all of the things. So that is an added bonus. Now, keep in mind if you go in, you're not feeling good. Go see your doctor, have another test run. Talk to them about medication, changing your medication, changing your dosage, changing the type of medication.
Maybe if you're taking synthetic medication like levothyroxine, you might want to switch to a brand name like Synthroid or a desiccated thyroid, something like that. Okay. Again, we'll get into this a little bit more, but I want you to speak up for yourself and advocate for yourself. All right. Number two, don't test without a plan. If you're just going in every three to six months to have these labs ran, and then you have no plan at the end of that, you're wasting your time and your money and your energy and your effort. What should a plan look like a plan to look like something that is encompassing diet, lifestyle, and exercise. If you need medication, absolutely adding in medication in there as well. But your plan should include those three main areas so that you are taking a well-rounded and holistic approach to feeling better.
It's not enough anymore. Just to say, I'm going to take medication and all will be well because as we have all experienced medication has side effects and the medication is not the end all be all for feeling better. Your body needs to be able to absorb digest, convert all of the thyroid hormones in that can't happen in the presence of unhealthy cells in the presence of a poor gut flora in the presence of a congested liver and on and on and on number three too much time looking at other people I don't know about you, but I spent a whole heck of a lot of time watching my friends on social media, doing all of these fad diets and meal replacement things. And I was watching their results. And I was like, I want that. And I would bounce from one thing to the next thing, to the next thing to the next thing.
Hoping that that next thing would be the answer and the solution. I never took into account that my body was different. Genetically metabolically, emotionally, physically lifestyle, all of those different components that affect our success or our failure. I didn't take into account that for me, eating a variety of foods and not having to weigh and measure and portion out my food that did not work with my personality. I love variety. I love flexibility. I love having guidelines and parameters and being able to stick to those guidelines and parameters and figuring out what worked for me and my lifestyle. That was the most important thing to me. And so, by going on some of these restrictive diets, it just didn't work for me, at least long-term it worked in the sense of yes, I was successful with that. However, I wasn't learning the skills of how to take care of my thyroid, how to plan and prepare food, how to put together a meal for my family.
I think it is the most beneficial to all of us to learn how to plan out a meal, to execute the meal and be able to enjoy the meal. And so that we can teach our younger, younger generation. That is one of the most valuable skills that my mom taught me was how to cook and prepare food in the kitchen. And that is something that I am teaching and passing on my three daughters, number four too much time with the same doctor y'all Oh my goodness. I could probably rant and rave about this in particular topic for a very long time. I'm going to keep it pretty short here. But the thing I want you to think about is your doctor listening to you. When you go in and you say, Hey doctor, I am feeling really good on this dosage. Really good on this medication.
I have energy. I'm able to wake up and feel good and I'm able to go to sleep at a good time. And I finally feel like things are working in my favor. Is he listening to that or her? Right? Are they listening to that? If no. And they're changing your medication anyways, because your lab results say something else. That's probably not supportive to you. That has happened to my mom numerous times with her endocrinologist. And it pains me. It hurts so bad because I don't want that for my mom. I don't want that for my clients. I don't want that for any woman. And that's an issue looking at the flip side is what if you're going into the doctor, you're having all the tests ran. You know that it's not normal for you to be tired, your hair to fall out, inability to lose weight.
Your nails are breaking. You're having heavy menstrual cycles. You've got mood swings and you're angry and you could sleep all the time. And you go into your doctor. Your doctor's telling you, well, everything looks normal. It must all be in your head. Maybe we'll prescribe you some antidepressants. And you're like, no, again, too much time with the wrong doctor. Because the interesting thing about fibroid patients is a lot of you guys, a lot of us have had thyroid issues for eight to 10 years before you were ever dyed. NOST think about that. Your body, your fibroid, doesn't go from zero to 180 overnight. It's incremental. It's a little by little. And so we need to find a doctor and we will be interviewing many doctors and practitioners here on the podcast, hopefully very soon where we can give you some greater insight as to who to go to what to ask for and how to advocate for yourself with a doctor.
So the big thing with that is if you do not find a doctor who is being supportive of you, who's not giving you a referral who is putting you on the back burner. Who's not listening to you either, you know, one way or another and changing your medication. When it, when you're feeling pretty good or not changing it, when you feel really bad, you need to find someone new. There are so many options. And I feel like COVID this year has been a blessing and a curse for many, many different reasons, but a blessing in the sense that a lot of practitioners are moving online and now have more options than ever before to work with someone like myself or work with a doctor online, or, you know, tele-health or all of these different options. We now have more options available than we have ever had before, which is incredible.
Number five, brace yourself a little bit here. Number five is being indecisive. So many of my clients will say things like, well, I know I should do this, or I think I should do that. Or I heard this, or, you know, I'm still on the fence about that. Y'all need to pick a plan, make a decision and move forward. Some of the best decisions I have ever made in my entire life have been decisions that I have made very, very quickly because I chose to jump in with that being said, there have been other times where I've made fast decisions and I didn't take the time to ask all the questions. What I'm recommending here is a happy medium spending. Three months, six months, 12 months a year, not doing anything is not serving you. Taking time to sleep on it or make a decision.
You know, within a couple days is going to be in support to you specifically because you will have some kind of plan to move forward. And to be able to execute that again, the plan that you need to be looking for, needs to be needs to include diet, lifestyle, and exercise. And it needs to be specific to you. Everybody inside the handsome method gets an individual and customized protocol because we understand the value of having something that is unique and specific to you. I can assure you, there are no two clients in my program right now that are on the exact same plan or protocol. They may be on similar meal plans. They may have similar supplementation, but it is completely different and unique to them. Because once again, we're going back to you are genetically and metabolically different, and therefore you are not the same as a person next to you, even your mom or your dad or your sister or your cousin or your aunt.
I want to challenge you make a decision right now. What plan are you going to move forward with? What is going to be supportive to you, getting your health back, restoring function and being able to get your body into a state of homeostasis because that's all your body wants is your body is trying to get you back into homeostasis. However, if you're too stressed out, if you're too worried, if you're not put in the right fuel in your body food, or you're not exercising, you're not taking care of it. You're not going to bed. Your body's going to rebel and it's going to be difficult. So even if you decide to make your own quote unquote plan, I'm going to go to bed every night. At this time, I'm going to eat, drink this much water. I'm going to eat this many vegetables. Great. You made a decision and now you get it tested out and make sure it's working.
And if it's not working, then you can change it because you're learning to track. You're learning to journal. You're learning to watch those bowel movements, even learning to tap into your body and say, is this really helpful to me? Or is this not making a decision one way or another is the most valuable thing that you can do for yourself and for your thyroid? And I'm going to even go here. It's also the best gift you can give your family because you're giving your family more of you, more of who you are meant to be. And you can't do that. You can't show up with yourself or for your family. If you're feeling like garbage Mike drop, right?
All of you guys are saying, Whoa, okay. I do get very passionate
About this topic because I believe women are central to God's plan. And when you were not feeling good, you cannot show up in the capacity that you need to, to be your true and authentic and best self. All right, we're going to leave that there. Number six, not speaking up. We see women with thyroid imbalances. They are struggling to speak up for themselves. There's a connection. There's an energetic connection between your thyroid and being able to speak your truth. And that's one of the mistakes that I see happening over and over again is that we are struggling to tell her husband, Hey honey, I really feel terrible. And I need to take care of myself and I need help. I need to go see a doctor. I need to, you know, work with Shannon. I need to work with a practitioner because I'm trying to do it.
And I can't. I need the accountability. I need the help. I need the support and I need you to support me because I can't do it alone anymore. That's tough stuff. I remember chatting with my husband and having a very similar conversation with him. And it's funny because we always seem to have these conversations in the kitchen. And I remember one of the times I told him I was, I was just bawling. And I was like, I can't do this anymore. And I know what I need to do. And I came at a time where I was struggling with depression. I have a long line of depression, and now I know where that comes from the genetic marker and the genetic snip that that comes from. And I was just bawling in the kitchen. And my husband was like, okay, what do we need to do?
You know, how can we get you there? And I said, I need to go get these specific supplements. And it came at a time. You guys, when we were living under poverty in income, we were before taxes were taking out, we were making about $13,000. My husband and I were both going to school. We had young kids in diapers and pull-ups and things like that. And I needed to go take about $50 and go purchase the supplements that I knew were going to change my life and helped me show up for my family, the way that they needed me to. And it felt like I was asking for so much, thankfully, my husband was like, yep, whatever we need to do, we'll make it work. Now that $50, now it would be equivalent to, you know, a couple hundred dollars or something like it wouldn't have been as big of an issue.
I probably, you know, now for me to go spend $50, I don't need to consult him. But at that time it was a big deal. And it would have probably been something around, you know, a thousand, $2,000 where I needed to consult with my husband first, or I do need to consult with my husband. Right. We, we, well, there's been a few times where I've spent a little bit of money without consulting with him first, but I did know that he would be okay with it because he was supportive to my goals and the things that I needed to do for myself. The other thing is speaking up with your doctor, telling them, communicating with them, keeping journals, keeping logs, keeping information, and saying, listen, doctor, I am really not feeling good. I don't believe it's normal for me to be sleeping for four hours a night, or I don't think it's normal that I'm sleeping for 18 hours a day and waking up and still feeling exhausted.
Help me figure this out because I can't do this anymore. And we need to use, I don't want to say forceful language, but we need to use strong language and communicate and say, listen, this is not normal. I don't feel good. This is not okay. This is no longer acceptable for me and become an advocate for yourself in any and every situation. Because at the end of the day, it is your body. It is your life. And only you can make a decision on how your body is going to react and how your body is going to respond and how you are going to get out of that. It is no longer okay, or acceptable for you to be sitting on the sidelines and feeling like garbage. And yes, that means you may need to invest time, energy, finances, and ask for help to get you there because I did not get where I'm at right now today by myself, I had a supportive husband.
I ha I found an amazing doctor. You guys, I went to, I think, around like five or six doctors to try to figure this out. And I went from natural pathic doctors to specialists like gastroenterologists and endocrinologists to figure out all of these different things going on with me. And it wasn't until I, the doctor that we did functional testing, we looked at how my body was functioning. We looked at how my kidneys, my liver, my intestines, all of those different areas were functioning. And we put a plan together based off of which organs and systems were not working optimally. And that's where I found massive, massive success. The plan didn't change every two weeks, right? Anytime we went to the doctor that that did happen with one of the, the functional doctors that I worked with, I would go in every two weeks report back and he would tell me, okay, this is what we're going to change.
This is what we're going to do. And so I was spending 75, actually, it was closer to 150 per office visit. And then I was spending another two, $300 on supplementation every two weeks, because that is a lot of money. Thankfully, we have really great insurance and an HSA card, and we have this opportunity, but that's not the case for everyone. And it wasn't until I found the doctor who started to look at my body in a functional sense, stating these, these things are working, these things aren't working, and this is what we need to do about it. And coming up with a comprehensive program, you guys I've worked with him for several months and my protocol did not change. Right? I've worked with him for three months after the three months, then things changed again for the next level for phase two, your plan should be very similar because once again, it takes about 90 days for your body to get to homeostasis.
And maybe it's not all the way back to homeostasis, but it's gotten to that place where you're like, wow. After 30 days, you should really start to feel the difference. You should start to be like, okay, I'm noticing this. My skin is clearing up my hair. Isn't falling out. My nails, aren't breaking off. I, you know, I don't feel so puffy and inflamed in the morning. All of those things you should start noticing, and it might be different for you. But those that's just an idea around 30 days. And at that point you shouldn't change a good thing. It means that it's working. And then we go into the 90 day Mark at the end and we say, wow, this is how far I've come. Now I'm ready for that next level. Now I'm ready for that next phase. Now I'm ready to take this more seriously because I got the results.
That's what speaking up does is it gets you from point a to point B much faster. All right. The last one, number seven, sit down for this one. Number seven is taking the wrong supplements or taking too many supplements. I want you guys for even tell you all of the things about the supplements. I want you to stop and think about, do the math in your head. How many supplements are you taking? How many supplements have you tried? How much money are you spending per week, per month, per day, per year on supplements, trying different things. Now some of my clients come in and they are taking zero supplements, but I'm going to tell you a majority of the clients, and I'm going to see upwards of 80 to 90, probably a little bit more percent of the clients that I work with. Come in.
And they're taking anywhere from 10 to 15 to 25 different supplements per day. That's a lot of money. Y'all even if you're taking the cheap stuff that you get at Walmart, which by the way, those are not good quality. And you're probably, well, not probably you're wasting your money. They're not being broken down. They're not being absorbed in the body. And they're filled with a lot of filler ingredients that are doing further damage to your body. So don't take those. If you taking high quality supplements and you're taking that amount of supplementation, you're spending $200 or more a month on supplements. Add that up guys per year. That is a ton of money and time and energy. And most of the supplements that you're taking is you find it from your cousins, sisters, aunts, brother's best friend who had thyroid problems. And they took those supplements and they had great results.
You should be taking no more than five supplements at a time. Because when we start to get into even five, six, seven, eight on up, this supplements are starting to counteract each other. And we don't know what is working and what is not working our protocols and our plans need to be very targeted and very concise to focus on the one thing that's going to make the biggest difference. I'm going to give you an example here. A couple months ago, I was talking with my practitioner and expressing my frustration in the inflammation I have in my body. Now, my inflammation is not painful every once in a while. I noticed some tightening or whatever, but majority of the time, I just look at my hands with puffy. My feet are puffy and it's a noticeable inflammation. And they asked me, well, why do you think that is?
I said, well, I think it's because of my liver, my kidneys. And we started talking through this and they asked me what I felt like I needed to do. I told them, and I was focusing on the kidneys, but if we trace it back, even one step further, it's my liver, right? This isn't for everyone. This is just Shannon, right? So I need to focus on my liver. I need to continue detoxifying and clearing out my liver and helping my body because we know through testing and stuff for myself that I do not make and create the master key later or detoxifier in the body, which is glutathione. Yes, I could supplement with glutathione or I could get down and dirty and force my body through diet and lifestyle to create and make and convert glutathione so that I'm getting to that root cause. And that's the path that I have chosen to take, because I know that about my body and it's not enough just to, just to supplement, be very careful with the supplements that you're taking, make sure that the plan and the supplements and the protocol that you're following are specific to you.
And they are specific to a specific area and they are targeting what is needed, needs to be targeted. And this is where working with a practitioner is very beneficial because they can see blind spots that you can't see. And going back to my example, yeah, I could focus on my, my kidneys, but maybe what is even better time, energy, finances would be for me to focus on the liver, which is what I chose to do, because I didn't want to put a bandaid solution on this. I want it. I want my liver to work better. I want it to be able to detoxify and filter through what it needs to be versus having to do 10 day cleanses and 30 day cleanses. I want to force my body in a nice, nice way to be able to do that on its own. And that takes time, energy, financial, emotional, physical investment on my end, to get my body to react and respond.
Let's get into a few action items that you guys need to do. And to kind of wrap this up, the big thing that I want to leave you guys with, and I told you several times in this program in this episode is that you need to have a concise plan that addresses your diet and nutrition. Number two, your lifestyle, maybe you have things in your home. The products that you're using that are keeping your thyroid a step. I made a huge shift earlier this year in cleaning up my bathroom products. I had cleaned up my kitchen. We have a very quote unquote clean kitchen. We use clean, safe products in there now, meaning we use glass containers instead of plastic. And we cook on, you know, high quality cookware and things like that. But one of the big areas that I neglected, because it was an easy thing to neglect, um, because it felt hard and scary is the bathroom.
I did not want to change my makeup. I didn't want to change the hair products. I didn't want to change the lotions and potions and all the things that I was using, because that felt very uncomfortable to me. I had been using the same products since I was in high school. You know, my mom had been using them and I had this quote unquote magic formula of how many hair and everything would look because I had been doing it for so long. That change made a big difference on the quality of skin, on the quality of hair, on my body's ability to detoxify and to feel better. I noticed that I don't have as many puffy days. I don't have all of the breakouts that I normally have when I forced my body into some liver detoxification, I will notice some acne popping up. However big things have changed.
And I made that change because I wanted the change for my daughters. It wasn't it, to be honest, you guys, it's not even about me. It's about my kids. And I knew that I couldn't continue that generational thing, that cycle of giving my kids the same makeup products, the same hair products when I needed to test them out so that my daughters could grow up being healthier so that they weren't putting endocrine disruptors on their body and putting toxins on their body that would hold them back. Hormonally, thyroid, all of the different things that was more important to me than staying where I was. So lifestyle lifestyle is a big part of this. And the last part is I had a personal trainer. I worked with my personal trainer a couple of times a week. I went in to the gym three to five times a week to exercise and to take care of my body and do all the things that I need to do.
And what I thought was quote, unquote healthy. When my body was already stressed out and I was forcing more physical stress on the body than what needed to take place. And my body was stuck. So I needed to match up the exercises that I was doing with what my body actually needed. And then, and then adding in supplementation and adding in all of these other bonus filler things that can accelerate the results, but I wouldn't have known what to do unless I was tracking things. So I want to be very honest with you here. I want you to feel good. I want you to have a plan and I want you to make a decision today, what you're going to choose to do. We're coming up on the end of the year. And that's a great time to make a decision, to choose a path, to get help, to speak with your husband and say, Hey, dear, I need some help.
And I'm no longer willing to do this on my own. It's going to take an investment. It's going to take time. It's going to take money. It's going to take energy for me to be able to do this. And I want your support. Will you support me? This? Isn't a matter of asking permission. This is a matter of telling him and communicating with him and asking for his. Buy-in asking him to support you in taking care of yourself. And hopefully you guys all have amazing husbands and spouses that are like, heck yes, let's do this. You know, and they're probably thinking about wanting to get healthier and more fit themselves. And being able to do that together, where everybody's eating healthier, everybody is cutting out the sugar and taking care of themselves. What a great time to be able to do that. I know that's difficult for many of us women to basically tell her husbands what we're going to do.
But my husband told me a while ago, he said, I've learned one thing about you, Shannon, you're going to do what you're going to do. I know you're giving me the courtesy of talking to me about it, but I've been married to you long enough to know that you're going to make a decision and you're going to move forward. And that kind of personality and dedication and focus for myself has really allowed me to become the person that I want to become that has allowed it allowed me and afforded me the opportunity to be sitting here and chatting with you on a podcast. Because if I would have kept myself stuck or scared, I wouldn't be here. It's about making fast decisions. Okay? Here's a quick little insight. Before we wrap this up, I had on my list to start a podcast for two years, I purchased the program earlier in 2020.
That taught me the tech and the things that I needed to really get a podcast started. And I didn't do much with it. And the first week of November, 2020, I was like, you know what, it's time I need to do it. I told myself that I was going to do it in November. I got in there and I started looking at things and started figuring it out. And I was like, I'm going to do this in two weeks. I'm going to have a podcast up and running in two weeks. You guys, I didn't know the tech. I didn't know the platform. I didn't have the equipment. I didn't know what the heck I was doing. Quite frankly, I just jumped in and I did it. And here I am where we've been over a month. Now what a blessing that has come out of this for me, the opportunity to reach you, amazing women and receive over a hundred downloads every single week over the last month has been beyond what I thought.
And I'm so grateful that I made that past decision to do something. All right. Thank you guys so much for joining me in today's episode, I feel like it was a little bit of a heavy hitter. Take a few minutes, take a few deep breaths ground yourself. And I want you to think about this over the next couple of days. What decisions are you going to start making? How are you going to stop wasting your time? All right, you guys thank you so much for joining and I'll see you in the next, Hey girl, I wanted to tell you about some of my most favorite cleaning products. The brand name is branch basics. I love them because they are plant and mineral based. They're all in one cleaning product system, meaning they have the same concentration is used for your bathroom.
