The decade between the War for Texas Independence and the Mexican War was filled with contention between the Unites States and Mexico, which earned their independence a half-century after we did. The concept of "Manifest Destiny", that the USA was designed to go "from sea to shining sea", was a major part of the emotional justification for the conflict. This book looks at a US military exploration of the West which led to a change in political fortunes for the lands in that region. Renowned author and excellent researcher Winston groom, who died in late 2020, talked to me nine years ago about this book.
