Simultaneously a beloved opera performer and a national troublemaker, she was known for living life her own way, ignoring the rules, expectations, and cultural norms for women at the time. She was twice sentenced to death for her actions, and twice pardoned by King Louis XIV for those same crimes. Once you've heard her story, you aren't likely to forget it.
