Social and Political: Nozick on "The Social Contract", the Three Types of Government and why Rawls Fails
Robert Nozick Explores the three options for Government,
Type 1. No Government: Literal Anarchy (here "Anarchy" means no Legal rules; Not chaos). But does it eventually lead to chaos?
Type 2. Utopia/”End State” Government: (Maximally Perfect World humans can attain, here, through Government, as in Rawls, Utilitarianism and Marx --"Government is Love"). But does it lead to a new and more horrific form of slavery, where you don't know you are a slave to these governments?
Type 3. Minimal/Libertarian Government (The "Minimal State"), where the Government only does what is necessary to protect your lives, your stuff and insure your free agreements with others; contracts and similar property agreements). But will such a government tax you, the successful, through force or course, to save the poor, lazy and thieves from their world and even themselves? Or will they be "left to die"?
Nozick explores all this and more. And he also explains why Rawls is Type 2, and why he believes Rawls' conception of justice appears to be an illusion. Also how Rawls Theory of Justice is fundamentally immoral.
I want to remind us that Rawls and Nozick were close friends throughout their lives. But in Philosophy, our first and best friend is finding and sharing the truth.
Cheers!
