One of the biggest steps we have to take as creatives is working for ourselves, and starting our own business. This can come with its own set of challenges, but it's nothing to be afraid of. You may think of yourself as a solo worker, but the moment you start working for yourself or step up to a higher position you become a leader. Even if your team is remote, and you have Virtual Assistants or freelancers you’re still a leader.
As they say, with great power comes great responsibility. Working with creatives below you means you have to respect them the way you like to be respected. Your team needs clear boundaries, and most importantly they need your trust. They need you to trust that they know the process it takes to get things done. Being a leader doesn’t mean taking the helm and controlling the ship. It means finding the right people to help you, and nurturing them along the way. Show them why things work, as opposed to just what works.
On this episode of Creative Warriors, I am joined once again by Todd Henry. I can’t get enough of him, this is his third time and I hope to have him on a fourth. If you missed his previous episodes, Todd writes books, speaks internationally on creativity, leadership, productivity, and passion for work, and helps people and teams generate brilliant ideas. In short, he’s an arms dealer for the creative revolution. His latest book is Herding Tigers: Be the Leader That Creative People Need.

My book, LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible is now available for pre-order.
Highlights - Middle management jobs are going away, and people are becoming more creative. A lot of people are thrown into leadership roles they aren’t ready for. Make sure you are clear on team expectations. The creative process needs a unique type of leadership that differs from traditional industries. Move from a mindset of control to a mindset of influence. Creative people need bounded autonomy. Hire the right person, then leave them alone. Your core message has to point to the “big steak”. Love is a very active, aggressive thing.
