The Pride Road Architects Podcast
Business
Ewen Miller studied his architectural degree in his home city of Aberdeen and after a year out in London he transferred to North London to complete his diploma. Following this he emerged into a market deep in recession so spent a couple of years working for a small practice refurbishing London Underground stations. Ewen then moved to RMJM where he spent a number of years working on projects including Lincoln University and Glaxo Welcome. Following his Part 3 he then moved to a small solo practitioners business in Buckinghamshire where he gained great experience in the mechanics of running a business.
Upon moving to Manchester in 2000 Ewen started work for CDA and then moved to Calderpeel Architects based in south Manchester eighteen years ago where he is now managing director. During his time at Calderpeel Ewen has seen the business grow to almost seventy staff and steered it carefully through the last recession when it dropped to just under twenty. With a growing order book the business currently employs 27 staff and has offices in Surrey, Liverpool, Sheffield, Manchester and Altrincham.
Ewen is immediate past chair of the RIBA NW, is also a past president of the Manchester Society of Architects and has just completed a six year tenure as national councillor at the RIBA. He is also chair of Altrincham Unlimited the BID for his local town and sits on Altrincham’s Design Panel. When not working or tweeting his sketch of the day Ewen is saving money to support his daughter who is going to start studying her masters in architecture at Bath this year.

The Pride Road Franchise grew out of Founder Lisa Raynes’ refusal to accept that there was only one way for a woman to have an architecture career and a family life. She built her practice in the domestic sector, and then invested to turn her business into one that other ambitious architects wanting work/life balance can buy into. She’s had a seat on the RIBA Council (2015-18), been Chair of Women in Property NW and founded Manchester Curious, an urban architecture outreach festival. A key focus of the Pride Road Franchise business in a box is the fully-automated customer relation management system, this system helps lead a flow of new clients to our franchisees.
