This talk, "Susimaparibbājaka Sutta SN 12.70" was given by Sis Sylvia Bay at the invitation of Buddha Dhamma Mandala Society (BDMS) via zoom meeting on 4 August 2020. This is the edited and annotated version.
This sutta is more commonly known as the Susīma Sutta where wanderer, Susīma infiltrated the Buddha's sangha community to learn what the Buddha had taught so that he can teach his own group of wanderers. A part of the sutta which is subject to misinterpretation was clarified by Sis Sylvia Bay regarding deep meditation i.e, are the deeper states of jhāna which can lead to development of psychic powers practised by arahants in their path to liberation? The core of this sutta, however is anchored on liberation based on wisdom to which Sis Sylvia skilfully dissected the phrase, ‘This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self' using the 5 grasping aggregates and three characteristics and highlighting why Buddha explained conditionality in both ascending and descending order when he taught Susīma. A highlight of the Q&A session is the explanation that one should not simply cut off contact without right understanding/view.
