In this episode of Anomaly Supplemental, KC and Sue discuss Ursula K. Le Guin's groundbreaking 1969 novel The Left Hand of Darkness, winner of both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for Best Novel of the Year.
The Left Hand of Darkness is regularly cited in discussions of gender and sexuality in science-fiction, but also touches on concepts of interpersonal relationship, international politics, patriotism, fear, and more. It is "among the first books published in the feminist science fiction genre and the most famous example of androgyny in science fiction" (Wikipedia). And it is often on lists of the best science fiction books, and almost always on top ten lists of feminist sci-fi and/or books by women sci-fi authors. So we both felt that it was about time we read it...
