Do you struggle with reading or math? Do you lose your place easily when working? Is reading sheet music ridiculously hard?
Well, it might not be your eyes OR your ADHD, mama. It might be something called Irlen Syndrome.
Not only does it tend to go along with ADHD (& autism!), it can lead to misdiagnosis.
Irlen Syndrome, also called Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, is a perceptual processing disorder, not a vision problem. For those of us who have it, it can lead to some funky vision impairment and:
- Extreme light sensitivity
- Wanting/needing to read in dim light
- Seeing waves or “rivers” in between the lines of text as we read
- Poor depth perception
- Bad coordination issues & clumsiness
- Low self-esteem or motivation
…and more.
However, even if you get this diagnosis, there’s good news:
There are things that can help!
Tune in to this week’s episode of Motherhood in ADHD to find out more about this condition and learn what you can do to counter these tough symptoms, including what symptoms to look for in children.
