Sleep disorders in children and adolescents can be a common issue and sometimes, they can be overlooked.
Studies have shown that poor sleep quality and/or quantity in children are linked to so many other problems, including academic, behavioral, developmental, and social difficulties, and weight abnormalities.
Not only do pediatric sleep problems affect child health, but they also have a direct impact on family dynamics and parental or sibling sleep too.
It’s also surprising to hear younger and younger children are almost ‘bragging’ about needing less sleep than they biologically may need.
Something culturally, we may need to address. Watch the video to hear my discussion with Gina Mason and Sanna Lokhandwala, researchers from the University of Massachusetts Amherst's Somneuro Lab, focusing on the topic of pediatric sleep.
In this episode:
- Why is infant sleep research younger than adult sleep
- Stages of Infant Sleep and its differences to adult sleep
- Implications of no-napping
- Understanding children’s circadian rhythm
- Why do infants wake up in the night
- Sleepy Signs vs. overtired
