Welcome and thank you for listening. It is the most wonderful time of the year. And it can be the most stressful time of the year. As a cardiologist, I often see more patients because of the food choices that they make. High fat, sugar and salty foods are all around and presented as an award for having made it though another year. Health can be ignored until January 1 when we promise to focus on new resolutions. But plant based nutrition does not have to be all fire and brimstone. I would like to help you navigate the seas of fat and salt and have you experience joy and satisfaction with healthy choices and alternatives that allows you to enjoy the holidays fully. Think of preparing a colorful table with a variety of vegetables, fruits, spices and herbs that is pleasing to the eyes and the palate. Most traditional appetizers can be made plant based such as a spinach and artichoke dip, stuffed mushrooms, or vegan sushi. Get your antioxidants with a cranberry salad with walnuts and oranges or caramelized apples. Baked pears with a cinnamon glaze and raspberries can make the table look amazing. Get help from the family making a holiday vegetable snowman or wreath. Make a hummus tasting talbe with a varety of different flavors such as black bean, chickpea, or red peppers. Add a topping station to allow guests to creat their own flavor additions with colorful peppers and olives.
But remember to get your exercise in as well. Nothing better to handle the stress of the holidays than a good run, swim or bike ride. The choice is yours but keep all your parts mobile. We discuss these things and much more during the episode.
