While filming Raise Your Rate Bootcamp someone asked me what my philosophy on rates was in regards to new therapists being able to charge higher rates while “expert level” therapists with 20 plus years of experience were still charging $90.
I would like to share my response here because likely this MFR therapist isn’t the only one with this question or the only one out there feeling really uncomfortable with “new” therapists making more money than them.
So let’s start with my philosophy on rates in general.
First, I believe that any service based provider should set their rates based not only on facts and data but also on what they want to be making. This involves gathering all of your bills and looking at your checking accounts to see what you spend each month both on a business level and a personal level. Know your facts and your data so you have the math problem to solve.
Then also understand exactly what your goals are for revenue and income. How much money do you want to be making? This goes for any provider, new, old, no experience, lots of experience, just learned how to do MFR, or have been doing MFR forever.
Good business decisions are separate from how good your skill level is. You can be really seasoned and make terrible business decisions and the same is true for newbies.
You do not have to wait to be anointed by someone to tell you that you can make money.
Listen in to hear my entire take on this question.
And If you are a John Barnes trained MFR therapist who wants to feel better in your practice, group coaching can help you regardless of the current stage of your journey.
