The question asked was - What is Om Swami’s parampara(lineage) and from where did it start? This is part 1, in a three-part series.
Om Swami says that he had plans of writing about this in detail someday, but for now he will address it briefly. He says, Om Swami which is the name of a thought or a light, can be called a tradition but not a person. For, a person can only be attached to one lineage. But, even his guru, Naga Baba was attached to more than one lineage or tradition, as he got initiation from different places. Om Swami says, that according to the tradition about which he has knowledge, the very first mantra was given by bhagvaan Narayan to Mahalakshmi Ma, to help humans redeem themselves by turning their thoughts and devotion towards him. Later, this same mantra was received by the Sanat kumaras, then by rishi Narad, from bhagwan Narayan himself. Dev rishi Narad started giving this mantra to some of his closest disciples. Parallel to this, around the same time bhagawan Ashutosh (Shiva) gave a mantra to Parvathi which would instil extreme detachment. Om Swami says, for Bhagawan Shiva, renunciation comes before detachment but for Bhagavan Vishnu detachment comes first before renunciation. A person who is able to live life knowing when to renounce and when to be detached, would attain success in their penance. A person who is not able to renounce something will find detachment difficult too. The knowledge and mantra that Shiva gave to Ma Parvathi, was passed ahead to the best tantriks among whom Parashar rishi was one and he later took it out from the atharva Veda and gave it Veda Vyas. From Rishi Ved Vyas the tradition kept going ahead. About five hundred years ago Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born and he had a son whose name was shri Chandra Dev who became a naga saint. As per the tradition of the naga saints, who were the disciples of Ved Vyas, the mantra was a part of their practice and it was kept going. He says, the tradition then branched out into two. One branch practiced the Devi mantra and the other branch Shiva’s. The Shiva mantra was later given by Baba Chandra Dev to his close disciples and later he established a tradition which was known as the Udasin sampradaya. These three traditions came together like the confluence of the Ganga, Jamuna and saraswati and this is the tradition to which Om Swami is attached.
