#13 A Candid Conversation about Systemic Racism with Teresa & Brian Melendez!
This was another very engaging and informative conversation! Thank you Teresa and Brian for joining us!
Teresa is an enrolled citizen of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Nation from Southwest Michigan. She is the CEO of TallTree Indigenous Education Consulting, Vice Chair of the Nevada Statewide Native American Caucus, and founding member of Native Voters Alliance Nevada and the Nevada Native Vote Project. Teresa has a bachelor's degree in Sociology and master’s degree in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education -- both from Michigan State University. She has spent the last fifteen years working in college prep and success, training and development, Indigenous language and culture revitalization, and youth leadership.
In recent years, Teresa has thrown herself into Native grassroots political organizing. On her free time, you can find her on the pow wow trail as a competitive fancy shawl dancer and Coordinator of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony Pow Wow Club.
Brian “BB” Melendez is a Northern/Southern Paiute-Western Shoshone from the Great Basin, and an enrolled Tribal citizen of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony. For the past two decades, he has been a Grassroots Organizer, a Spiritual Leader (Sundance Chief of his Tribe’s summer ceremonies and other ritual dances), a formerly elected Tribal Legislator, a Law Enforcement Officer for the State of Nevada, a former Federal Operations Officer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the CEO of Lucentree, LLC (an Indigenous Consulting Firm), a published American Indian Spirituality Scholar, the host of the Coffee with an Indian Podcast, and the President/CEO of Tribal Minds, Inc., a Native Non-Profit. Brian has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, a master’s degree in Justice Management and is currently applying to Law School.
In his free time, Brian is composing a novel and hoping to be completed with this task by the year's end.
