How Does Certainty Create Division in Democracy?
Welcome to the Faith In Each Other Podcast. If we are going to have faith in each other, we believe we need to be willing to have hard conversations, and that is what we aim to do on this show as we learn together and go through the journey together of seeing where we, as a society, have gone wrong and where we have gotten it right.
In today's episode, Tom, David, and Jordan discuss the topic of certainty, and how it creates division in our democracy. In a democracy, certainty implies that anyone who disagrees is wrong. It implies that a certain belief or point of view is obvious, and therefore anyone who does not follow that belief is incompetent. In our faith, we can become blinded by our own certainties to misinterpret God’s plan for us. Certainty is a way of thinking that breeds anger in a debate, leads to misrepresentation of God, and rarely leads to positive outcomes. So how do we set aside our certainties and keep faith in each other?
We hope today's conversation encourages you in your journey to have hard conversations and most importantly...to listen to others around you.
