The veil is thinning, Goblins. You might feel it in the air, that crisp chill, the changing quality of the light. That means it's time for one of the most beloved and equally misunderstood celebrations of the year....SAMHAIN!!! Join Brooke and Sarah for a seasonally appropriate chat about the dangers of root vegetables, how to avoid pukkah poop, and the glorious ways that you can bring autumnal holiday traditions into your own home.
We can feel the turning of the Wheel and now is the time to gather your acorns, make those adorable spooky crafts you've let pile up, and prepare a delicious meal to honor your ancestors while you listen to the latest installment of...THE GOBLIN SQUAD!!!!
REMEMBER, GOBLINS: This first round of Goblin Scout Challenges that we offered needs to be sent to us via DM, email, post tags, etc by Halloween 2023 in order to qualify for your free Goblin Scout Badges. After Halloween, we will be changing the format of the scouts and the program offerings. Need a reminder of the challenges:
'For the Birds'
Identify 10 different birds in your area
Tip, use the Merlin app (not sponsored) to help with identification
It can be hard to photograph birds in the wild, so if you're able to get the pics, that's awesome! But if you can't, don't worry, you can send us the Species name, date, and county location where you saw it. You can type up your list or take a pic of your list and send it to us!
'A Stone Called Steve Austin'
Find a Hagstone (aka Adderstone)
Usually found by water (seashore, lakeshore, dry river beds) - a Hagstone is any type of stone with a naturally occurring hole all the way through it.
Note - Hagstones are amazing protection amulets and can be worn on a string around your neck or carried in your pocket to ward against negative energy.
'Faer BnB'
Find a fae or haunted building or structure in the forest
To complete this challenge, find a stick structure, fairy ring, mossy hollow in a tree, driftwood shelter, or any other locale that could be occupied by either faeries or ghosts out in the forest and send us a pic. We are flexible on this one! So when in doubt, send us a DM.
'2 Craft, 2 Curious'
Use a foraged item in a recipe, craft, or work of art
Here are some ideas, but if you want MORE ideas, make sure to go back and listen to Episodes 11 and 12 for a foraging two parter: Make fried dandelions, a mushroom tincture, dry some flowers, make herb bundles, do some natural clothing dye, whatever your little foragey heart desires. And then tell us about it! Remember, again, safety first. Do not consume anything that you are not 100% certain is edible and safe for you to consume during the course of this challenge.
'Gobby Hobbies'
Which Sarah can never remember but will find the text for and add to these show notes later when she hasn't run out of time. OKAY LOVE YOU, GOBS!
