The British Empire: Control Of Sudan 🐪 A-level History Learning & Revision

In this episode, we’ll describe Britain’s growing influence and control in Sudan from 1820 to 1885. We’ll talk about Egypt’s conquest under Muhammad Ali Pasha, which established Turkish Sudan and led to widespread enslavement. As Britain expanded into Egypt, Sudan became increasingly dependent on British economic support. We’ll discuss Colonel Charles Gordon’s role as Governor-General, his efforts to Westernise Sudan and abolish the slave trade, and the resistance this provoked. Finally, we’ll explore the rise of Muhammad Ahmed, the Mahdi, his military victories, and the siege of Khartoum, which resulted in Gordon’s death and Britain’s temporary withdrawal from Sudan.
