Many of you have read my book on meditation, "A Million Thoughts." I have written a significant point in that book, which is the basis of pure meditation. And that is mental exertion versus mental relaxation. In any meditation, you should know how to maintain balance. Suppose you feel that your thoughts are going in all directions, and you are becoming lazy while meditating. At that point, you should stop for a second. At that moment, imagine a bright light or sun or planet or any flower and refresh or rest your concentration. You would need to exert yourself slightly mentally. For example, if I give you a multiplication problem, you need to exert your mind a bit to know the answer. Similarly, in meditation, when you feel laziness, stop at the moment, and exert mentally and say to yourself that I have to see this thing only. If a thought comes, I don't need to go after that thought. If you go after thought, that thought will drag you with it. Listen to this insightful discourse by Om Swami to find out more.
