Cuenta la historia que un gran maestro oriental, cruzando un río poco caudaloso, vio a un alacrán que se ahogaba. El maestro compadecido de este pobre animal, le extendió la mano, y lo dejó subir por su brazo para salvarlo. Tan pronto el alacrán se sintió a salvo, le clavó su aguijón a su benefactor; este lo soltó, pero nuevamente se llenó de compasión y lo dejó subir una vez más a su brazo.
Un niño que inocentemente presenciaba la escena le preguntó al maestro:
