Galatians 5:16 "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh."
To live in the flesh is to live outside of the word of God.
Apart from the Holy Spirit , we cannot lead godly lives.
His grace empowers us to resist sin and obey the Father.
The Spirit helps us:
Interpret scriptures
Fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ
Without the Holy Spirit, no one can have a fruitful and victorious Christian life.
The Holy Spirit is a member of the Holy Trinity and is equally involved in the creation of the world.
Genesis 1:2 & 26
2. "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters."
26. "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."
Matthew 28:19 "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:"
John 14:16-17 & 26
16. "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever;"
17. "Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you."
26. "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."
What does the Holy Spirit do in our lives? The Holy Spirit:
Is a person
Teaches and reminds us of what we have learned.
Seeks to testify about Jesus rather than himself.
John 15:26 "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:"
Convicts us of sin, judgment, righteousness:
John 16:8-11
8. "And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:"
9. "Of sin, because they believe not on me;"
10. "Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;"
11. "Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged."
Guides us into all truth:
John 16:13 "Howbeit when he, he Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come."
Glorifies Christ:
John 16:14 "He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you."
Dwells within us when we walk with the Lord:
Romans 8:11 "But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you."
A person is filled with the Holy Spirit when they are living in obedience to God.
Reveals the Lord's plan for us:
Romans 8:14 "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God."
Give us assurance that we are the child of God:
Romans 8:15-16
15. "For ye have not received the Spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry Abba, Father."
16. "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God."
Equips us with our spiritual gifts:
In order to have unity, God gives different gifts to different individuals.
1 Corinthians 12:7-8
7. "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal."
8. "For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;"
A gift of the Spirit is a capacity for service; a function.
We are powerless without the Holy Spirit moving in our lives.
We will glorify Jesus Christ when we walk in the power and not in the flesh.
The gift of the Spirit is not our talents. The gift of the Spirit comes from the Holy Spirit and uses us to deliver that gift.
Gives power for evangelism:
Acts 1:7
7. "And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power."
8. "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."
Intercedes for us:
Romans 8:26 "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."
Seals our salvation:
Ephesians 1:13 "In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise,"
