Ep #57: Changing the way we look Metastatic Breast Cancer- Caroline Johnson- Founder of Twisted Pink
It's as if the world stops turning when you hear the words, "You have cancer." Caroline Johnson never thought she would be apart of the growing statistic of women battling breast cancer, but that is what happened in 2013. Caroline was no stranger to advocating for causes close her her. Until this point in her life, Caroline was advocating fearlessly for her son that that was dealing with a series of developmental delays. Her focus had to shift to help save her own life. She quickly learned that the very popular pink ribbon was not exactly serving the purpose that she once thought. She no longer felt the comfort in the mass support of breast cancer awareness. The more she dug into the research and funding she learned the money was not going to saving the lives but more for profit. Metastatic breast cancer has no cure cure and most breast cancer patients have a 20-30% of developing this more severe type of cancer progression. What was more shocking to Caroline was that only 10% of the funding from major breast cancer charities was going to metastatic breast cancer research. Listen in as Caroline discusses the drive behind Twisted Pink and why she strives to never stop questioning the status quo.
