Jim Carrey has played so many hyperactive characters over the years that it's understandable that HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano have a lively and laugh-filled discussion about his career in this podcast episode. They talk about how Carrey's background in stand-up comedy helped him develop a keen sense of comic timing, and how his limber physical movement has prompted comparisons with Jerry Lewis and Peter Sellers. Carrey's breakout hit "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" (1994) may not be the best place to look for a sophisticated plot or even basic logic, because all it cares about is making you laugh. A funny thing happened on the way to building a career, however, because Carrey eventually alternated deliberately dumb movies with more serious comedies such as "The Truman Show" (1998) and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004).
