1. Seek First to Understand:
- Take a moment before heading out to understand your child's perspective. Are they tired, hungry, or overstimulated? Recognize potential triggers for tantrums, considering their history with events, shopping, or late nights followed by early mornings.
2. Prepare for the Worst:
- Before entering the store or event, prep your child for what to expect. Communicate that if they struggle, they can let you know, and you'll do your best to help. Set expectations about not buying treats until after the outing and establish a plan for handling meltdowns. Pack a bag with snacks, a favorite toy, and a comfort item. Consider calling in reinforcements or having a friend on standby in the parking lot for support.
3. Change the Conversation:
- Instead of reacting negatively to tantrums, redirect their attention positively. Use distraction, the 'Columbo' technique, or give permission for the child to express frustration. Engage in a game or discuss something positive about the holiday experience. Offer conditional praise for handling frustration well during the shopping trip.
