#19 Angela Walker & Misha Safran ~ Passing Joy around the World
This episode was near and dear to my heart as I experienced some nostalgia remembering my caregiving journey with my mom while she battled cancer almost five years ago. It was painful yet, we were creative together and found ways to experience joy too - YES, these two can coexist and we let them!
Today I interviewed, Angela Walker. Angela is a Caregiver Coach. Her focus is on helping caregivers to plan and manage care for aging loved ones and to create balance in their own lives.
Angela’s journey into this field began 10 years ago as part of a sibling care team for her mother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. Her mother reached the grand age of 102 years old! However, the decade long care journey, layered with managing the deteriorating effects of Alzheimer's Disease, was very challenging. Angela’s feelings of overwhelm caring for her mother and frustration with trying to navigate the senior support agencies made her feel that the care process was unnecessarily complex and that there had to be a better way.
Over the years her understanding, empathy, appreciation and concern for the roles that caregivers play grew steadily. The knowledge, skills and strategies that she acquired through training, research and personal experience resulted in a successful care process for her mother from initial diagnosis to hospice care and led to her decision to offer her assistance to other caregivers.
Angela has training in the Positive Approach to Care for people living with dementia, an undergraduate degree in Psychology, and an MBA in Human Resources Planning, both from the University of Chicago. Over the course of her career she has advised mental health clients, corporate information systems customers, college and graduate students and has provided career services departmental and program leadership on the university level.
Angela has been married for 43 years, has 2 adult daughters, resides in the Atlanta, Georgia area and is an avid doll collector.
